Congress fires salvos against BJP on Rafale scam

Aftermath the Supreme Court gave a clean chit to the Narendra Modi government in the Rafale case, observing there was no case of “irregularities” and commercial favouritism in the multi-billion dollar deal, a war of words between the BJP and Congress continued.
Lok Sabha MP from Assam, Gaurav Gogoi who is general secretary of AICC on wednesday said, Now it is quite ironic that this BJP Govt is allergic to JPC “.
Addressing reporters at Congress Bhavan Imphal today, the Congress leader alleged that BJP has misled the apex court of the country in Rafale case.
Terming Rafale deal as the biggest Defence scam of Independent India in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, he said,
“Rafale Scam is a copy book case of squandering ‘National Interests’, causing loss to public exchequer and promoting a culture of ‘Crony Capitalism’ at the cost of Public Sector Undertaking”.
He alleged, ‘Art of deceiving India’ is Modi government’s mantra and hit out at the BJP-led NDA government for compromising national security and brazenly indulging in cover up exercise after being caught lying.
Going back to the genesis of the defence deal, Gogoi said the then Congress-led UPA government decided to buy 126 Rafale jets from the French company at the rate of Rs. 526.10 crore per aircraft and as part of the deal, 18 aircrafts were to come in ‘fly away’ condition from France and 108 aircrafts were to be made in India by Public Sector Undertaking, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. with ‘Transfer of Technology’. However, on 10th April 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced emergency ‘off-the-shelf’ purchase of 36 Rafale aircrafts in Paris, at the rate of 1670.70 crores per aircraft, the AICC leader informed and asked “Will PM Modi explain as to why an extra amount of Rs. 41,205 Cr is being paid from public money?”
While the Prime Minister and Defence Minister refused to divulge the inflated price of 36 Rafale aircrafts citing ‘secrecy clause’, Gogoi claimed that the agreement between India and France had no such clause on non-disclosure of commercial purchase price. And when the Congress-UPA had disclosed the price of Dassault Aviation-made Mirage aircraft, as also Sukhoi aircraft and other Defence purchases on the floor of the Parliament, he said the refusal to disclose the reason of inflated price reeked of a scam.
Former Manipur Chief minister Okram Ibobi said Congress party has been demanding to invevtigate into the Rafale scam by a joint parliamentary committee comprising MPs from both ruling and opposition. However, BJP led NDA government declined the JPC probe panel, Ibobi said while seeking clarification from BJP government as to why it refused JPC probe in the Rafale case.
JPC panel is not only for Congress, MPs from different pilitical parties including Congress and BJP will also be the members. During UPA regime, Congress accepted any probe panel as BJP demanded. The affidavit submitted by NDA govt to Supreme court regarding Rafale case is against the existing norms. It is misleading of court by NDA government. NDA regime has misled the people, he alleged.
