Manipur was filled with a festive mood on the eve of Ningol Chakkouba, the biggest festival in Manipur, chocking most of the important routes passing through the historic Khwairamband Keithel, the main market in the state capital on Thursday with the festivities just a day away.
Thousands of shoppers mostly women folks coming from various parts of the state thronged the Khwairaband, the busiest market place here for the last minute shopping for the Ningol Chakkouba. Ningol means daughter and Chakouba means invitation for a lunch in their parent’s house.
To meet the demand for fish for the festival, a fish fair cum fish crop competition was held by the State Fisheries department at the DM College of Arts ground, Thangmeiband Imphal which is yet to be made operational here this afternoon.
On Ningol Chakouba married daughters visit their mother’s place wearing their finest and bringing fruits and sweets for the family. The daughters have lunch with the family members. The daughters are also presented gifts by the parents and brothers.
Meanwhile greetings for the greatest festival of Manipur are pouring in from various quarters. Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh extended his greetings to the people of the State on the occasion of the Ningol Chakkouba.
In his message to the people of the State, the Speaker wished that the advent of the ‘Ningol Chakkouba’ which is going to be celebrated on the second day of ‘Hiyangei’ (November), he further conveyed, in his message, good wishes to all the married sisters and daughters and their kith and kin of good health, happiness, wellbeing and lasting love and care in the years to come. “May this year’s ‘Ningol Chakkouba’ bring peace and prosperity to all irrespective of caste and creed,” it added.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has extended its warm wishes to the people of Manipur. A release signed by president of MPCC, TN. Haokip stated that the festival of Ningol Chakkouba greetings to the people of the Manipur. “Ningol Chakkouba is one of the biggest festivals for the Meitei Community and this year it falls on November 9,” it said adding that the occasion marks the everlasting bond and love between sisters and brothers and the high respect accorded to women in the society.
“May the occasion of Ningol Chakkouba deliver peace and prosperity to the people of Manipur,” the release added.
In another release signed by MLA, Nungba assembly constituency, Gaikhangam has also extended both Ningol Chakkouba wishes to the people of Manipur. “May the festivals bring joy and gaiety to the lives of the people, and promote goodwill amongst the different communities residing in the state,” it said. Also, Manipur Secular Democratic Front and Manipur Pradesh Trinamool Congress Committee extended Ningol ChakKouba greetings to the people of Manipur.
