Joining the nationwide protest against demonetization on completion of two years, hundreds of Congress workers in the state today staged protest demonstration in front of the RBI Imphal office at Thangmeiband.
Manipur Pradesh Congress committee organised the protest in commemoration of the day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetized Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on November 8, 2016 which were then in circulation .MPCC president TN Haokip who led the protest said that demonetisation severely affected all sections of the society including big companies, small scale industries, farmers, workers and common man. International Monetary Fund has predicted financial crisis in the country if the present financial trend continues further. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is responsible for such situation, TN Haokip said while demanding immediate resignation of the prime minister.
He recalled that altogether 150 people died as a result of demonetisation including one Akoijam Modhu from Manipur. The elderly man died after he collapsed while standing in queue in front of Post Office, TN Haokip said.
Coupled with demonetisation, introduction of GST has sparked unprecedented inflation as indicated by soaring prices of petrol and LPG. The twin initiatives have pushed the Indian economy in doldrums, he said.
Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh who served as a member of the governing body of World Bank, Governor of Reserve Bank of India and Union Finance Minister at different points of time remarked in the Parliament that demonetisation was a ‘monumental mismanagement’, TN Haokip said. Attending the protest, MPCC vice president T Mangibabu said that NDA government demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes on the pretext of unearthing the huge black money. Instead, demonetisation has affected small scale entrepreneurs, farmers and poor people. 99 percent of the demonetised notes of Rs 500 and 1000 returned to the banks. Where is the black money which NDA claimed to unearth, Mangibabu questioned. Modi is a man who acts against the aspirations of the people in the country. The country will suffer longer if Modi regime continues, he said and appealed to the people to teach a fitting lesson to BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2019 for the wrong doings committed by BJP.
